The
ultimate 1984 fan experience: “1984
Mock City theme park”
My
Idea:
Would you like to experience the world of George Orwell’s 1984 first hand? Then come and visit
Oceania! This mock city that was built based on the descriptions of Oceania in
George Orwell’s 1984. Complete with
propaganda and hired actors around the city to make sure that you have one of
the most exhilarating experiences of your life at our park—while remaining as
close to the story as possible.
Sales
Pitch!
Experience the world of Big Brother in
the landscape of Oceania—walk through the Victory mansions and feel the
telescreens watching your every move as Big Brother monitors your entire “life”
here! Even see Winston and Julia’s hide out! Experience the thrill of Big
Brother products—have your very own cup of Victory gin, or perhaps smoke a
Victory cigarette. Walk though Oceania’s town square and see all of the
propaganda that Winston and his comrades saw! Here, you can also be a part of
the two minutes hate, get ready to scream and roar for you hatred or Eurasia—or
was it Eastasia? As a member of the party you can also go into your very own
section of the ministry and forge your own document to erase history, the same
work that Winston took part in. And don’t forget to see prisoners of war from
Oceania’s enemies get taken to prison. There are many things to choose from
when you come to the Oceania theme park—all of which we have put extensive work
into to give the fan of 1984 the best
and most accurate experience to any fictional story.
Why
I Think It Will Work:
I
think that this idea will work because 1984
is a popular book and read in many schools—so a lot of people will be
familiar with the story. Also, because it is going to remain extremely accurate
to the book, so people will be intrigued to see what it would be like to walk
in the shoes of Winston Smith. I think the fact that there will be actors and
people posing as citizens around the park will make the person who comes to the
park want to come back, because it will always be different, rather
than the same old ride over and over. Next, I believe that the fact that there
are so many activates to choose from will keep bringing people back.
I
got this idea as soon as the project was announced, because while I was reading
the book I was just trying to wrap my head around how someone could live in
such a dystopian society—and what it would be like. So when the project was
assigned I decided that I could make a theme park where you, yourself could
actually experience the world rather that imagine it. Some of the activities
that are offered directly relate to the book as well. For example, the
telescreens that watch you as you go through the park are just like the ones
that are described in the book, so are the products that are sold as you walk
around the park. So the park doesn’t really relate to any specific scenes in
the book—but rather it is more of an experience of everyday live in the society.
Despite this some of the activities that are offered directly relate to the
book, such as the two minutes hate,
working in the ministry, walking through the Victory Mansions and seeing
Winston’s hide out.

Interesting idea! I think you're right--the popularity of dystopian novels sort of shows that people are intrigued by what it would be like to experience one. I like the details from the book you've chosen to include.
